—A Garland for Gatsby—

The eighteen solo piano pieces of A Garland for Gatsby...lead us through characters and scenes from F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel ‘The Great Gatsby’. The mood varies from the elliptical subtlety of Ravel to the lissom melody of Poulenc...Here is a composer worth close attention.
Rob Barnett, MusicWeb-International, Oct 2008

Very much enjoyed this piece; it's tonal, lyrical, employs the 20s idioms without either obvious pastiche or embarrassment. Excellent tunes too...This is a most engaging disc.
Jonathan Woolf, MusicWeb-International, Nov 2008

‘A Garland for Gatsby’ unfolds and holds together with nonchalant vividness, charting a range of shifting moods that's both subtle and effective. So is Gates' own deftly accomplished piano playing mirroring the wry economy of the music itself.
Malcolm Hayes, BBC Music Magazine, Jan 2009

Sonics are fine, and I find Garland for Gatsby the hit of this CD - a sort of solo piano soundtrack for an imagined movie. - John Sunier, Audiophile Audition
